the inimitable ld nero with his first outing for running back. best-known for his merits on trelik and a poetic sound which is distinctively his own, ld nero immerses himself in a rare breed of deep house music that isn’t classicist, yet dateless, emotional but not kitschy, and most of all meditative without drowsiness. devoid of any second thoughts, these are three tracks made for those wee hours in the morning that may never end.

after showcasing the debut releases from the high on wye quintet (magic mountain high, soulphiction and steevio) and monoak, the freerotation label returns with a various artists 12” featuring four more artists intrinsically linked by the annual festival. anthony child, aka surgeon, has been a regular fixture since first appearing at freerotation in 2011. his recent exploration of modular synthesis and use of the buchla music easel has found a home in the ambient yurt at the festival, and equally has manifested in album projects such as 2015’s electronic recordings from maui jungle vol 1. “unconscious fearless determination” follows on from this more experimental, less dancefloor-focused side to child’s work, while still pulsing with the techno fundamentals that quickly defined him back in the mid ‘90s. duckett hails from north wales, and has been a key part of the freerotation fabric since the beginning of the event. after some releases on mindtours, mindyourhead and sthlmaudio back in the mid-‘00s, his music has started to reach a new audience through releases on untilmyheartstops and a clutch of lauded live performances. “breaks my heart when i remember that day” captures the alien synthesis and emotional heft that singles duckett out as such a remarkable artist. steevio is the co-founder of freerotation and mindtours records, responsible for a huge swathe of techno releases reaching back to the ‘90s. as well as his releases on mindtours, he has recently appeared on untilmyheartstops and in collaboration with pev on schmorgabsord, and is set to appear on russ gabriel’s new label rivers of groove. with its expressive swells of off-kilter melody and snaking drum lines, “pendulum” continues the thread of exploration steevio has been following on his journey into experimental modular techno. tom ellis has been prolifically issuing forth material in a soul-enriched space in between house, techno and funk for more than ten years. from running the acclaimed trimsound label to releasing albums and singles on telegraph, archipel, hartchef discos and more recently ethereal sound to name but a few, tom’s recorded work and immersive live performances continue to reach out to new moods and timbres. “as a take” finds tom at his most reflective, layering on dubby effects and organic instrumentation in a truly meditative end to the ep.

nice price deal !!! macro has been the home for the albums of some of electronic music’s most exciting live acts. so when a live band enters this context, it should better enter with a bang. kuf do just this with their album debut. the three-piece outfit with keys, bass and drums cooks up a sound that is as warm, cozy and exciting as it is utterly alien. the rhythm section hints at the great history of dirty funk and bouncing r’n b, but the grooves are firmly of today: dance-centered, thrillingly interactive and broken up at the best possible joints. the bewildering thing about kuf is that it is a vocal-led group that has no singer on stage at all. all vocal elements are based on self-recorded samples which keyboard whizz kid tom schneider melds and bends and squeezes in real time. as if it was the most natural thing to do. with no artificial synchronization in place, valentin link on bass and hendrik havekost on drums push the disembodied voices into an arena of hyperintegrated realtime magic of rough soul, intertwined by improvised outbursts and shaped with the aesthetics of raw mpc-based cut up techno.

falling ethics label owner p.e.a.r.l. uses the 8th installment in his fex series to come up with a remix ep that includes the some of the most exciting names techno has to to offer at this very moment. a great 12” that includes remixes from man of the moment tensal, berlin based phase fatale and stave (member of talker).

ep number four of this series of eight remastered tracks with remix-tributes to the techno legend christian morgenstern is here, and kicks off with d_funcs remix of steigreider on side a. creating a warm grayscale atmosphere, the track is carried by a heavy sub kick groove thats saturated with the modern industrial energy that proves kowalski’s skills as a techno craftsman. as a contrast, jeroen searchs remix of aces high on b1 is a more minimal interpretation, carried by a slowly developing beat and playing skillfully with the most recognisable elements of the original. the final track, a remastered version of morgensterns lydia to the edge of panic is a timeless classic, painting a morgenstern-typical distant and dream like landscape and opening up into a widescreen chord progression, with an epic build up.

lastly, she owns the game is the most melodic of the lot, with a far sighted ripple of keys, spaced out atmospheres and muttered vocal lines all making for something that is truly from another world.

black country overlord justin k broadrick (jesu, godflesh) blesses regis’ downwards fiefdom with two tracks and a tightly sprung rework by surgeon. downwards have really picked the foulest iterations of a grim set for vinyl release, inscribing the industrial-strength torque of nothing is free - which sounds like early kode 9 battered by shapednoise - at 45rpm across the front face, and branding the knuckling 808 snares and distended electro bass blow out of kontorted on its backside. surgeon’s remix of the title tune ranks among his best in many years. trace elements of the original are extruded thru modular kit and remodelled on a bouncing, swerving techno chassis recalling bmb and cub classics, but streaked with sirens and vamped by a marching brass refrain that’s just spoiling for war. the release marks a long overdue overlap between downwards’ and broadrick’s interrelated industrial, noise and techno circles. broadrick was the original drummer for napalm death on their scum (1987) album, before forming the legendary godflesh, and carving out an oeuvre as one of the most feared and respected musicians to emerge from birmingham and the uk ever since.

this is the second collection to bring together many of the visionary producer clement ‘sir coxsone’ dodd’s early recordings made with jamaica’s most exciting young artists and musicians. the triple 180 gram vinyl release includes a download code.

over the course of four albums, manchester based trumpeter, composer, arranger and band-leader matthew halsall has carved out a niche for himself on the uk music scene as one of it s brightest talents. his languid, soulful music has won friends from jamie cullum and gilles peterson to jazz fm and mojo as well as an ever-growing international following. his label gondwana records is home to gogo penguin and his own albums have found halsall exploring the modal jazz of john and alice coltrane, paying tribute to the hard bop of the late ’50s and early ’60s or most recently on fletcher moss park drawing on eastern influences in his most personal statement yet. his latest album when the world was one is something of a companion piece to fletcher moss park (much of the music was written at the same time) but draws more explicitly on halsall’s love of spiritual jazz and eastern music as well as his own studies in meditation and travels in japan. beautifully recorded at hasall’s favourite studio, 80 hertz in manchester, and engineered by brendan williams and george atkins it features the recording debut of halsall’s large ensemble, the gondwana orchestra, which utilises the exotic flavours of harp, koto and bansuri flute and eastern scales to create a global palate for halsall’s life-affirming sounds.

2016 is shaping to be a fantastic year for rebirth records, the 10th year anniversary and the 100th release…to celebrate this special date the label owner shield and his right arm robytek get in the studio to collaborate with two of the most innovative figures of the end of 70s / early 80s. the a side is the the pyramids with isabelle antena, french singer and songwriter, founding member of electro-samba pioneers antena. in the 1990s she also led another group, the powaga sisters, for three albums between until 2004. alongside these projects she maintained a solo music career, selling over a million albums and earning musical acclaim across the globe. from camino del sol (1982) to bossa super nova (2010), her cool latin, bossa, jazz and funk vibes have delighted ears and feet worldwide. the pyramids is something really special, a cosmic and balearic song with a timeless meaning, with the collaboration of martin ditcham (sade s percussionist) for the drum and paolo mantini, a real italian talent, for the bass and chords. the aa side is now, a collaboration with salvatore principato (sal p.) and dennis young, known as the vocalist and marimba/percussionist of (for the legendary early 80 s nyc band liquid liquid) seminal nyc minimalist-funk band liquid liquid. the experimental sounding band emerged from new york city s vibrant downtown scene in 1981, developing their own unique sound which they called big beat, a fusion of irresistible basslines, junkyard percussion and urgent, free-flowing lyrics. the group s successes included club hits such as cavern (sampled by grandmaster flash in the making of white lines), bellhead and optimo in addition to sold-out concerts worldwide. sal p and dennis still explore today new ways of writing & performing music. now is the experimental way to combine the live drums played by snacks (the berlin based duo rene corbett & aljoscha babel), with the electronic world and the unique musical textures from sal p and dennis young.

dead fader - john cohen is surely one of the most overlooked voices making electronic music today. his approach to making honest and emotive electronic music has pushed the boundaries in recent years and challenged so many concepts and traditions within the music industry and scenes. but also without loosing sight of a bigger picture and finding a balance between emotions, technology, politics and expression.

answer code request picks up where he left off with his album (code, ostgut ton, 2014) and 12“ (calm down, mdr, 2015): with the neume ep the berghain resident offers three new tracks, meandering between restrained club contexts and brittle break beats, machinery and futurist soulfulness. the eponymous track “neume” starts off on a with shuffling rhythms atop a heavy kick, soon caught up by first surging then predominant drone motifs, flashing bleeps and piercing strobe sounds. “meta” on b1 clocks in instantly without any build-up: its rhythm section sets the tone with broken beats while acr slowly carves out more musical detail and textures: subtle command vocals from the machine room, swelling synth pads and other chilling, athmospheric means are subsequently being added until the track’s break where the emphasis shifts towards the kick, pads and synth melodies until the track’s sustained, smooth outro. “vis” on b2 is the ep’s most protruding track: classic uk garage shuffle rhythms and amen breaks are contrasted by a funky kick and dreamful pads, intertwined with additional sparse percusion, layered with what in the first instance sounds like chirping birds but then like sparking wires. answer code request continues what he does best: combining the warm human touch with chilled alienated aesthetics.

this is an album of deeply emotional music. it s not all heartfelt niceties and eye-welling moods though. rhythmic theory did after all come to light (or should that be dark) in the gloomy alleyways of uk soundsystem music begat from dubstep and all that other stuff. -creeper- is on hand to affirm that this is a record still steeped in true, stern moodiness, where a stalking sub line, some metallic percussion and an icy drone can still strike fear more than a thousand angry wobble basslines. it s worth noting how much attention has been given to shorter vignettes. as well as the aforementioned, cryptically titled -interlude-, -work of fiction- and -end (of forever)- both give insights into the places rhythmic theory cares to roam beyond the structure of a long form track. these are places where melancholic or downright ambiguous dispositions interplay with each other, from the synthetic to the earthly, the malevolent to the tender. in the end, even at its most monochromatic, nothing is black and white on rhythmic theory s debut album, and that s just fine with us.

basil & rogers is a sleazy, california disco duo made up of heru (dj) johnny basil and body rogers. basil, a multi-instrumentalist, long-time record collector, and energy healer is a man that s been making music for a long time under many different guises and in many different styles. heru avenger (acid/psych rock), non stop (electronic/free jazz), baast (kraut rock/jazz funk), and kandi jones (slut rock) are just a few of his projects, past and present. most of this music has been around for the entirety of the 90 s and 2000 s without being heard because despite basil s outspoken appearance (described by many as looking like iggy pop s twin brother and would never be caught wearing a t-shirt no matter the location) he s very quiet about his musical output. body rogers is also part of the non stop group and is a master of electronics and engineering. on the basil & rogers project the two have made a disco 12- that is influenced by classic-era dance music while still being completely unique and far from conforming. it s crazy, it s sexy, and it s sleazy. tune in .

i was deep in texas when a call came through... -hey man it s cherry ! ...we got some sick new shit for you, gonna blow your mind- i waited nervously for the package. it arrived two weeks later. i slipped the hot black acetate from its wrapper and placed it on the turntable... wired guitars wail like banshees on heat, primal beats erupt drenched in dark juice from roots of trees slick with crunk. flutes and bells hang like exotic flowers that reek of jungle sex and all night long the pulse goes on and on and on as usual cherry was right...this most surely is one sick motherfucker of a record. don t get me wrong there s warped beauty here aplenty but you gotta take it easy. don t ingest it all at once...make sure you re in comfortable surroundings, trust me i know...six months later and i m still feeling the burn. damn you cherry garcia.

following last summers acclaim ruede hagelsteins long player apophenia, we once again revisit the album, this time with a few stunning remixes from the drifter, can be love synth, and ruede himself of the hugely popular footprints feat. c.a.r.. up first is the drifter and he turns out what may be his best remix to date with a swelling, emotional ride that will most definitely be an anthem for the coming summer. taking a different approach, yet just as engaging, ruede reworks his original into a dark, looping psychedelic odyssey perfect for late nights or early mornings. can love be synth rounds out the remixes with a gorgeous pop-esque twist on the original choosing to focus on live instrumentation and retro synthesis resulting in a cross-over favorite. and finally, for all the times you want the vibe without the vocal, a dub version of the original gem.
